Penn South Community Garden
Many of us have walked by this private garden, but have not been admitted. It’s run by a very exclusive group of residents of Penn south…104 to be exact. The waiting list is long and only about eight spots become available annually, usually due to an individual neglecting to renew on time.
Each box is divided into three sections for three individual members who choose to grow vegetables, flowers or whatever other legal plant they choose to tend to.
There is a community dining table which seats 12 and must be reserved, though the goal is to do it in a way that the serious gardeners are not disturbed.
I was fortunate enough to be admitted by one of the Board Members who explained the rules and format. I enjoy watching in the garden become established in the early spring, the first arrival of flowers and, as they die off, peaking through to find the promise of luscious fruits and vegetables 🥒 showing up.
I especially loved the glimpse of grapes growing on the arbor. See if you can spot them.
In Autumn the garden celebrates the transition with equal dedication. Take a walk on the wild side…W. 25th St just east of 9th Ave.
