Berg’s Bar Crawl
Introducing our newest section, called “Berg’s Bar Crawl”. This features my high school friend, Jon Berg, and his adventures in finding the best bars and drinks around the world!
This is a Champagne cocktail served at the Lanesborough Hotel which is located at Hyde Park Corner in London. Back in the day, there was a period when I had to travel to London each month and this was a hotel that I stayed at a lot. My most memorable experience at the Lanesborough was the summer of 2006 when my wife and I visited our son who was going to school there at the time. Just as we were about to return to the Colonies, British police discovered a plot to smuggle liquids onto airlines – since then taking liquids onto planes has been outlawed – and Heathrow was closed for many days so that the authorities could sort things out.
For days we tried to get back to New York on airline tickets we were issued and each time, after a long wait at the airport, our flight was cancelled. Even though the Hotel was busy they always took us back and gave us a room, night after night, until we finally were able to fly out – and even then we couldn’t find a flight at Heathrow and had to travel way out to Stansted Airport. So the Lanesborough represented to us more than just a place to sleep but rather a safe haven in a very scary period.
The Hotel is 5-Star – every room gets a personal butler — so it’s not surprising that they have a wonderful cocktail lounge and bar area and that their signature cocktail is built on Champagne.
We both liked this cocktail a lot, it’s classy. But when my wife, who prefers a lighter libation, had the idea to add some San Pellegrino. We absolutely loved the drink-you may very well too!
Here’s how you make it:

- In a mixing glass add Grand Marnier, cranberry juice, and passion fruit puree.
- Add ice, shake vigorously and strain into a chilled Champagne flute.
